Ethan Explains California Proposition 55

Ethan Explains California Proposition 55

This is number 5 of 17 of the California statewide ballot initiatives that I’ll cover, Proposition 55. Proposition 55 is “The California Extension of the Proposition 30 Income Tax Increase Initiative.”

Remember the Proposition 30 “temporary” tax increase for K-14 to save the children during the Great Recession? Proposition 55 is the nearly permanent extension of the .25% sales tax and large income tax increase for brackets of $250,000 and above.

Wait, what happened to temporary? Because of the Great Recession?

If you listen to the majority politicians in Sacramento, the economy in California is doing great! So, which is it: is it doing great or not? If it is then the temporary tax is ready for a sunset.

Further, the highly progressive income tax leaves this funding to the gyrations of the stock market, which is what caused the problem in the first place.

Lastly, even proponent of Prop 30 argued with me that Prop 30 had to pass so then they could go back and fix the structural problems with education in California. Which never happened.

I say NO to Proposition 55.

Ethan Explains California Proposition 54

Ethan Explains California Proposition 54

This is number 4 of 17 California statewide ballot initiatives on the ballot this year. Here I talk about Proposition 54, the Public Display of Legislative Bills Prior to Vote proposition.

If we learned anything from the Affordable Care Act, it is that we need our legislators to actually look at legislation and make it available to the public for review. Before the vote. With enough time to actually read it.

Prop 54 requires that after a bill is finalized, a 72 hour period pass with the legislation posted online for public review.

Seems pretty logical that both we and the legislators have a chance to review legislation before a vote, doesn’t it?

The only people against this must like backroom dirty deals to sneak things past the public.

I say vote YES on Proposition 54.

Ethan Explains California Proposition 53

Ethan Explains California Proposition 53

California has 17 statewide ballot initiatives this year. Here I talk about Proposition 53, California Voter Approval Requirement for Revenue Bonds above $2 Billion Initiative.

Californians already vote on general revenue bonds. This proposal is inflation adjusted for voters to approve revenue bonds for over $2 billion. Things like the Sacramento River Delta Water Tunnels and the California High Speed Rail will be covered by this initiative.

This is a great way to hold politicians to account for their project promises and for voters to have more input. We already vote on this kind of money on everything else, we should on revenue bonds as well.

The arguments against are singular and weak. All under the banner of local control, which I usually support. Here, the local control over a $2+ billion dollar revenue bond? Like what? They claim bridge repairs in Los Angeles.

Really? A bridge repair in Los Angeles? I find that a specious argument for the Democratic majority in Sacramento to continue spending on revenue bonds as they see fit. Regardless of what the voters actually want.

I say vote YES on Proposition 53.

Ethan Explains California Proposition 52

Ethan Explains California Proposition 52

California has 17 statewide ballot initiatives this year. Here I talk about Proposition 52 “Medi‐Cal Hospital Fee Program. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute.

California politicians just can’t help themselves to fund whatever they want with money earmarked for a specific purpose.

In this case, California passed a law in 2009 to tax hospitals for raising funds to get maximum matching federal dollars for Medicare. Medicare in California is called Medi-Cal.

The politicians have basically stolen $900 million out of this fund to move into the general fund. Prop 52 will require a 2/3 vote to make any changes in the future instead of just a majority vote, making it much more difficult to raid.

I say stop the profligate spending. Start by voting YES on Proposition 52 November 8th.

Fox News Happening Now Oct 14 2016

Why Trump Supporters Are Mad At Me

Thank you to Fox News Channel for having me back on Happening Now with host Jon Scott to discuss the presidential race. My fellow panelist is San Diego talk radio host Mark Larson to defend Donald Trump.

I argue that Trump is done and state that his self-admitted sexual abuse of women/girls is my vote for Clinton.

At the :39 mark – “People are fleeing from Donald Trump as they would from a hurricane, as they should”

Ethan Explains Proposition 51

Ethan Explains Proposition 51

California has 17 statewide ballot initiatives this year. Here I talk about Proposition 51 “School Bonds. Funding for K-12 School and Community College Facilities. Initiative Statute”

Should the state take over school bonding for construction & repair? Up until this initiative, that has been a local issue.

And I bet you can’t guess the money behind the initiative. You don’t think it’s the developers? Oh, it is. Nearly $10 million.

And this is an area where Governor Jerry Brown and I agree, keep the money and control out of Sacramento, keep it local.

Vote NO on Proposition 51 November 8th.

Ethan Explains WikiLeaks Podesta Dump

Ethan Explains WikiLeaks Podesta Dump

The saga of WikiLeaks dropping damaging email dumps continues. Now it is Hillary Clinton‘s campaign chairman, John Podesta who has been leaked. And it can be quite ugly.

I am deeply disappointed in Donna Brazile for leaking questions to the Clinton campaign while working for CNN. I don’t like the continuing antipathy toward religion from within the DNC. And, I find it fascinating they were worried about Marco Rubio and even Ted Cruz, but not Donald Trump.

Last, stop it on social media with faked WikiLeaks emails. If you refer to one, always provide the link to the original WikiLeaks email. Also, a from email address, unless from a DNC staffer, top person, etc. is absolutely meaningless. I receive emails all the time from people saying all kinds of things. It doesn’t mean I agree or have any part of it.

What are your thoughts on the WikiLeaks Podesta Dump?

Ethan Explains Second Debate Grade

Ethan Explains Second Debate Grade

The second presidential debate went down last night in St. Louis, Missouri. It was town hall style with the moderators Anderson Cooper and Martha Raddatz attempting to keep things in order, without much success.

Trump supporters will love last night as he went on the attack and said he’d put Hillary Clinton in jail. Just like an autocratic, fascistic, dictator. Which is apparently what a number of his supporters want. Someone like Mussolini. They will also defend him saying the moderators gave Clinton more leeway and cut him off more. There is truth to that charge, too. Although Trump interrupted Clinton far more than she interrupted him.

I give Hillary Clinton a B for doing what she needed to do, although she was incorrect on a couple of items. I give Donald Trump a C for an adequate performance, but he wouldn’t answer questions, he would kind of address the question, go off elsewhere, and then maybe come back to the question.

But did it change anyone’s vote? I doubt it.

Ethan Presidential Vote Bombshell Announcement

Ethan’s Presidential Vote Bombshell Announcement

Saturday, October 8, 2016, I have made my decision. If Donald Trump is on my ballot November 8th, I’ll vote for Hillary Clinton.

The audio of Trump’s conversation with Billy Bush is beyond sickening and apparently confirms that Trump isn’t just a misogynist, he is a sexual abuser of women. In his own words. Repeatedly.

This is not just “boys will be boys.” This is sexual abuse, abuse of power, and more. We can never teach our boys and young men that this is okay. It is not.

Take a look at New York’s Penal Code:
A person is guilty of forcible touching when such person intentionally, and for no legitimate purpose:
1. forcibly touches the sexual or other intimate parts of another person for the purpose of degrading or abusing such person, or for the purpose of gratifying the actor’s sexual desire; or
2. subjects another person to sexual contact for the purpose of gratifying the actor’s sexual desire and with intent to degrade or abuse such other person while such other person is a passenger on a bus, train, or subway car operated by any transit agency, authority or company, public or private, whose operation is authorized by New York state or any of its political subdivisions. (N.Y. Penal Law § 130.52.)

or California’s:
Any person who touches an intimate part of another person, if the touching is against the will of the person touched, and is for the specific purpose of sexual arousal, sexual gratification, or sexual abuse, is guilty of misdemeanor sexual battery, punishable by a fine not exceeding two thousand dollars ($2,000), or by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding six months, or by both that fine and imprisonment. (Pen. Code, § 243.4(e)1.)

I strongly dislike that I am being forced into voting for who is likely to be the most flawed President in my lifetime. There are not viable alternatives this election and Trump’s own words and actions forced my hand.

Leave me your comments below.

EDIT: To be clear, this is NOT an endorsement of Hillary Clinton, just a statement of my opinion. I still want a viable 3rd and 4th party, they just need to do better than Johnson and Stein to get my vote.

Ethan Explains Killing with Cars

Ethan Explains Killing with Cars

Traffic deaths were in a nice downward trajectory. Sadly, that is no longer case. In 2015 traffic deaths rose 7% and so far this year we are up more than 10%.

What changed? Automotive safety technology continues to progress making us safer, so that is actually keeping the number of deaths down.

However, we all have smartphones now and are too busy looking at them while on the road instead of paying attention to driving.

You lack self-control. And now we will have to implement technology to stop your technology or else we need to rapidly roll out self-driving cars.

Please don’t drink and drive. Please don’t text or tweet while driving. We can save 36,000 lives per year by just paying attention to what we are supposed to be doing while behind the wheel.

What will it take to get you to put your phone down while driving?
