Let me put the DNC Server/Ukraine hoax to rest. Please feel free to share (please credit me when you do).
I was asked again why the DNC didn’t allow the FBI to have the server for analysis. Here’s my response:
- It has nothing to do with allow. That’s the wrong question and I’ve never seen evidence they “didn’t allow” the FBI to do as you ask.
- InfoSec is almost entirely virtual and almost never physical. The only reason I want to physically examine a server is for physical fingerprints OR extremely rarely when attempting to recover data off of wiped hard drives (however this almost never happens anymore as anyone with any skill knows how to wipe drives and make them unrecoverable, I used to do it for banks, insurance companies, etc).
- InfoSec forensics is almost entirely reviewing detailed technical logs (from servers, routers, switches, and computers which are a combination of physical and virtual) and using software to analyze them, making traces using arcane technical jargon that few actually understand.
- The president and his defenders claim the server was in Ukraine. False. Easily proven false. IP addresses are assigned in blocks to Internet providers BY COUNTRY. The DNC mail server was not using a Ukrainian IP address, therefore it could NOT have been in Ukraine when it was operating. The global routing tables would have never routed the traffic and that cannot be done, even with highly sophisticated tools.
- The whole idea of a mail server is specious nowadays. I was CTO of a tech company I cofounded where we hosted mail servers for many companies, including those with high security concerns (in addition to creating a product called Rapid Rebound, etc.) Every mail server we setup dating back to 2005 was a virtual setup. Physically grabbing my servers would have been meaningless, other than someone’s desire to brute force hack the encryption.
In sum, the whole DNC server/Ukraine connection is a sad hoax perpetrated to redirect attention away from the president/Giuliani/etc. A classic red herring. Exactly as my grandfather Bunny used in his magic tricks so the audience wouldn’t see what he was really doing to setup the trick.
